The Imperial Ice Stars stage a spectacular new version of the beloved ballet Swan Lake, transforming it into a breathtaking ice show at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre. For anyone curious about what an ice show entails, this performance is an absolute must-see.
Who knew you could watch world class ice skating and figure skating stars perform Swan Lake on ice within the intimacy of a theatre stage? The innovative blend of classical ballet and ice skating creates an enthralling spectacle that captivates from start to finish.
A timeless love story
At the heart of Swan Lake on Ice is a poignant love story. Prince Siegfried (Maksim Miroshkin) meets and falls in love with Odette, the White Swan (Olga Sharutenko), who has been cursed to live as a swan by day and a woman by night. Their romance is a central theme, filled with passion, longing, and the hope for freedom. The chemistry between the Prince and Odette was heartfelt, drawing the audience into their enchanting and bittersweet tale.
One of the standout moments of the show was the dance between the Prince and Odette in the woods. The combination of the misty ambiance, delicate snowflakes, and a starry background transported the audience into a dreamlike forest. The use of beautiful panels to frame the scene added depth and a cinematic quality that made it feel like you were watching a movie. The set design by Eamon D’Arcy throughout the show was a visual treat and blended with the music of Tchaikovsky hand in glove.
The music of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake arranged by Tim A. Duncan, remains a powerful presence throughout the performance. While Duncan’s arrangement introduces elements that feel modern and new, the essence of Tchaikovsky’s original composition is beautifully preserved.

The White Swan vs The Black Swan
The contrasting beauty of the White Swan and Black Swan (Viktoriia Mikhailova) dances were a highlight of the show. The White Swan embodies water—ethereal, graceful, light, and pure. Sharutenko’s movements are delicate and fluid, evoking a sense of innocence and serenity. In stark contrast, the Black Swan, Odile, is like fire—alluring, seductive, and unstoppable. Mikhailova’s performance is bold, dynamic, and filled with an intensity that is both captivating and commanding. This duality not only showcases the dancers’ versatility but also adds depth to the narrative, making the emotional stakes of the story even more compelling.
The Imperial Ice Stars were nothing short of spectacular. Each performer was mesmerising to watch, bringing Tchaikovsky’s timeless score to life in a fresh, exhilarating way. The skillful choreography by Tony Mercer seamlessly marries the elegance of ballet with the dynamic flair of ice skating, leaving the audience in awe.
