Visionary designer BROCKMAN (Sydney Theatre Award Winner: Constellations, Metamorphoses) moves into the director’s chair for a production of Equus as you’ve never seen it before, reimagining the modern classic through the lens of fatness, fetishisation, desire and power.
Utilising KXT’s traverse seating to its full effect, BROCKMAN’s bold take places audiences face-to-face with the classic play. After 17 year old Alan blinds six horses, psychologist Dr. Martin Dysart is tasked with finding out the motive. As Dysart digs into Alan’s fractured inner world, he is drawn into a mind shaped by raw sexuality, religious fervor, obsession, and repression; forcing him to question not only his patient, but his own carefully ordered life.
“As a fat queer artist, I am approaching Equus through a perspective that is rarely centred in classical theatre. For much of my career, I never saw bodies like mine represented on stage as worthy of love, intimacy or devotion. The company is made up of theatrical stalwarts and emerging artists. Twenty year old Ryan Yeates (Charlie and the Chocolate Factor, Caroline: or Change) steps into the role of Alan whilst Jay James- Moody (Herringbone, The Drowsy Chaperone) returns to the Sydney stage in the role of Dr. Dysart. Joining them are Linda Nicholls-Gidley (Monster), Sophie Gregg (The PM’s Daughter), Gus Murray (Angels in America) Stephen Madsen (Muriel’s Wedding) and newcomer, Cloud Fernandez-Montoya as Jill.
Shalamah Tautaiolefue’s first acting role sees them as Nugget, the object of Alan’s devotion and the production’s beating heart. Neither horse nor fantasy, Nugget becomes a living embodiment of desire itself: seductive, dangerous and impossible to contain.
Produced by Daniel Cottier Productions (Occasional Combustible Disaster, Sydney Theatre Award Winner: The Inheritance) in association with bAKEHOUSE Theatre, and with a ferocious team of designers offstage, this gripping exploration of passion challenges audiences to confront what it truly means to heal, and what might be lost in the process.
