Jordan Barr’s newest show Dog Why is a blend of humor and powerpoint presentation which puts Barr’s distinctive energy onstage, combining her cheery demeanor with sharp intelligence.

The show features three powerpoint presentations dispersed amongst the hour show. The opening segment relies heavily on reading directly from the slides, leading to predictable punchlines and a sense of what the audience can expect. This was not the most engaging way to start off the show, however the subsequent two slideshows were well paced and genuinely funny.

Barr’s style feels a lot more like TikTok comedy; smaller anecdotes and gags in rapid succession, rather than having a cohesive throughline that ties together multiple ideas. Asking questions from ‘what is it like to be a girl?’ to ‘who are some horrible people?’, this approach can lose its impact. Just like seeing something on short form media, it’s enjoyable and rewarding as there is little investment, and you get a slight giggle, but then onto the next joke for another slight giggle. Her relaxed and natural presentation style creates a comfortable atmosphere and whilst relatable, felt way too predictable. There weren’t many jokes that took me by surprise or made a lasting impression.

You can, however, clearly tell Barr is an intelligent, natural performer. With some niche references to historical events and figures, and how eloquent she was while performing, Barr is someone I would gladly listen to on a podcast. Dog Why blends humor and relatability with some silly musings. While some aspects feel predictable, and it doesnt leave a long-lasting impression, Barr’s overall peppy nature makes for an enjoyable experience.
