Michelle Braiser’s It’s A Shame We Won’t Be Friends Next Year is a multi- layered, evocative and hilarious exploration of shame and criticism. Performed by one of Australia’s funniest comedians Braiser asks why it’s so hard to move past negative comments – both professionally and personally, and how it overshadows any kind of positive feedback.

Braiser commands the room and brings so much energy to the performance. She’s able to intertwine light and shade, discussing darker topics all while making the audience laugh. Her comic timing and storytelling are a real highlight of It’s A Shame We Won’t Be Friends Next Year. She also showcases her incredible singing voice with musician Tim Lancaster. The pair work well together and Lancaster’s musical talent really adds to the overall performance.

Her experience is relatable and she talks about it with so much honesty that the audience really gets behind her throughout the journey. We’ve all had instances where a person’s words stick with you no matter how hard you try to shake them. In one instance, Braiser does what we all wish to do – get closure. She confronts a school classmate about a comment made many years ago and the answer – as well as this new Fringe must-see – is a surprising one.
