USE THIS SPACE TO PROMOTE

The Prom Review – Joyful, camp, and full of heart

Type – Camp, Musical Comedy
If you liked – Muriel’s Wedding the Musical, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Kinky Boots

There is something undeniably joyful about a show that fully embraces its camp sensibilities, and The Prom leans into this from the very beginning. Packed with high energy choreography, bold colour and plenty of sequins, the production creates a vibrant and uplifting theatrical experience that balances humour with genuine heart.

When a group of narcissistic Broadway stars are faced with a wave of negative publicity, they latch onto a cause to repair their image. They travel to a small town in Indiana to support a teenage girl who has been banned from attending prom with her girlfriend. What begins as a self-serving mission quickly evolves into something more meaningful, as the group help amplify her voice and bring a community together through acceptance, courage and love.

Presented by On Your Feet Australia, this Australian premiere of the Broadway musical brings with it a number of self-aware theatrical references that will particularly resonate with musical theatre fans.

As a newer theatrical space, the Teatro Theatre continues to grow into itself, and this production feels like a confident step forward with only minor early run inconsistencies that will undoubtedly settle over time. For a relatively intimate venue, the production achieves an impressive scale. The set design by Nick Fry transitions seamlessly between a sequin drenched backdrop, school hallways, hotel rooms and bedrooms, maintaining pace and visual interest throughout. Lighting by Roderick Van Gelder enhances the bright and colourful tone, while costumes by Cornelia Cassimatis fully commit to the camp aesthetic with an abundance of sequins and strong character detail.

Under the direction of Andrew Bevis, the show feels cohesive and well-paced, allowing both the spectacle and the more heartfelt moments to land effectively. The choreography, led by Nathan M. Wright in his role as co-director, is a standout, delivering dynamic and engaging numbers that consistently elevate the show. Musical direction by Bev Kennedy ensures strong vocal delivery across the cast, while sound design by Niamh Sinclair supports clarity and balance throughout the production.

The cast deliver across the board, from leads through to ensemble. Caroline O’Connor shines as Dee Dee Allen, bringing exceptional vocals, sharp comedic timing and undeniable stage presence. Brendan Monger delivers a heartfelt and engaging Barry Glickman, balancing humour with emotional depth. Sophie Montague is perfectly cast as Emma Nolan, grounding the show with warmth and sincerity while delivering standout vocals.

Theren Reynolds and Bella McSporran round out the principal cast with charisma and energy, each bringing their own sense of fun while also meeting the more emotional moments with authenticity. The strength of the ensemble further enhances the production, maintaining high energy throughout.
