Filipino-Australian Composer Debuts New Musical Project, NYMPH

The critically-acclaimed composer of ‘Someday – a Mindful Cabaret’ returns with a bold new work – NYMPH – featuring a female-led, South-Australian creative team, and a cast of electrifying voices.

A new musical in concert with a healing original score by accomplished actor-musician, Jennifer Trijo, will debut at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in February 2026. The project, titled ‘NYMPH’, is a concert presentation of key songs and scenes from a new Australian music theatre work in development titled, ‘Dragonfly’ which centres around key characters: Luna, Sol, and Nature with an ensemble of Poets. ‘Dragonfly’ was a finalist in the 2024 APRA AMCOS Professional Development Awards’ Music Theatre category and this its first-stage development.

A Daydreamer, Sol, meets a Sleepwalker, Luna, on a hill during an eclipse. A life-altering conversation challenges their worldviews and sense of identity as Nature oversees their transformation. A musical about introspection, becoming, self-actualisation, and what it means to be othered. It is part allegory, part song cycle set in a fantasy realm which explores philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson’s insightful phrase “do not seek outside yourself”.

The cast comprises some of the Elder Conservatorium of Music’s emerging music theatre artists alongside established actor-musicians. Leading the cast are Sophie Volp as Luna, Joey Haenen as Sol, and Jennifer Trijo as Nature. The ensemble features Max Garcia-Underwood as Poet and Sol (Cover), Ellie Esdene McMahon as Poet and Luna (Cover), and Gabriel Sharra as Poet. NYMPH will be directed by Valerie Berry and accompanied by Emma Knights on piano, who is also Associate Music Director. Visual artist, Katie Dridan, and Photographer, Kyahm Ross are also involved in the production.

Trijo is well-known to Australian music theatre audiences for her performances in hit shows such as Hadestown, Once, and Miss Saigon. She received the Cultivate at Nexus Arts Residency and a grant from the Adelaide Fringe Foundation to produce this new work.

“Receiving project funding to create new work feels like validation in itself. Others already believe in this project, now I want them to believe in themselves. I want to invite audiences into a transformative theatre experience, to consider what may be holding them back from living their truth, and awaken from the sleepwalker-state of just existing in this lifetime.” – Jennifer Trijo
