Bronwyn Kuss had never really been that desperate to have kids, but she kind of thought she’d accidentally get pregnant at some point. One idea that -since coming out as a lesbian – has become a bit complicated. Recommended throughout her life that she’d make a fantastic mother by gay witches and random men on the street, all while coming up against the end of her thirties and the metaphorical ticking clock, Kuss has begun considering whether it’s something she should do.
Taking us through the terrifying folklore of precum and the unidentified importance of toilet babies, Kuss guided us through shocking and unsavoury topics around sex and parenting with a raised eyebrow.
The set is slow-paced, calm and brilliantly structured, letting me feel like I was getting to hang out with the coolest person at the lesbian bar for an hour – though perhaps not drunkenly recommending her to have a child. The jokes weren’t crafted to make you laugh out loud at every word, but to let the absurdity of Kuss’ stories slowly settle into your bones. Kuss trusted the audience, letting you fill in the blanks and discover the end of the story before she said it, until she decides to completely unearth you.
Kuss didn’t have to work to get our attention, her stage presence and complete control of the room let her create a low-stakes and conversational hour. Utilising casual delivery, the charged nature of both Kuss’ stories and topics were able to be distilled and played with so the audience could giggle about hanging out with a random-potentially-dangerous-man at 2AM in a city you have no accommodation in.
