Adventures of a Redheaded Coffee Shop Girl is back for another season of the Edinburgh Fringe following its sold out run in 2015. Rebecca Perry plays Joanie Little, an anthropology graduate working as a barista. Not wanting this job she sees as a deadend get her down, Joanie studies those around her – the customers, her co workers and learns some life lessons along the way. It’s fun, wholesome and really showcases Perry’s many talents. Perry is an actor, singer and playwright based in Canada, whose CV boasts loads of film and tv credits, as well as theatre.

What struck me about the show is Joanie’s optimism, love for life and the people in it. Her ability to experience joy in the more mundane aspects of life and watching her embrace challenges makes this show energised and fun to watch. Perry’s bubbly and generous performance really gets the audience behind Joanie and we’re all rooting for her.

The set is simple but effective – resembling every small, modern coffee shop with a sense of charm and homeliness. It creates a world that the audience would want to hang out in.

The musical numbers as well are a highlight, showcasing Perry’s singing talent and bringing a touch of magic to the show. I would have loved to have seen more of what Perry can bring to the show in this regard.

Confessions of a Redheaded Coffee Shop Girl has been widely performed all over the UK. It’s tight, polished and an absolute joy to watch. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a little bit more optimism and magic in their lives.
