Season: Aug 20 – 25 Just the Tonic at the Caves

5 STARS

In this brand new comedy musical audiences are introduced to the Weird Sisters - Amaranth, Scarlett and Blush. All equally weird but each with their own personalities, talents and strengths. Amaranth is the oldest and a perfectionist. Scarlett’s got attitude and can speak to the dead. Blush is probably the sweetest and master of Witchtok. They are looking for new members of the sisterhood, initiating the audience through crowd work and call and response. It’s fun and engaging and is effective in getting the audience buy in for this wonderful ride.

These characters are so relatable and ‘The Weird Sisters’ captures growing up as a teenage girl without being condescending. Amaranth deals with the pressure to be the family leader after the death of their mother, Scarlett has to let go of her attitude to deal with her grief and Blush learns to set boundaries and stop focusing so much on other people.

Their plan backfires and they are thrust into the human world with no way of returning. This musical packs in so much – there’s great, catchy songs, a strong storyline and complex themes around female friendships, family dynamics and grieving. All of it is handled in a comedic and fun way without downplaying the severity of their situation. The three main actors are strong singers and have great characterisation skills. Their relationship is endearing and a joy to watch.

The location itself is perfect. The "caves" in Edinburgh are ancient, underground chambers, the stone walls and dimly lit corridors really help create the atmosphere this witchy spectacular.

The set and props are delightful, with a mix of skulls, candles and a framed photo of arguably one of the most iconic characters ever created.

I would love to see this musical go on to bigger and better things. Get a ticket while you can!
