kwento and Red Line Productions presents Ate Lovia
by Jordan Shea at The Old Fitz Theatre 12 May to 4 June 2022

” I’m old enough to understand everything you’ve done to make sure we survived, but young
enough to realise we need to start again” – Ate Lovia, Act 2

Ate Lovia (pronunced AH-teh low-VEE-yah) is a new Filipino-Australian drama, that explores what it means to stay loyal to your family, no matter how brutal it gets. Life seems to be looking up for the Ejercito family in 1996, despite a new boom of conservatism spearheaded by John Howard and Pauline Hanson. Nineteen year old Lovia falls in love for the first time, her alcoholic, disenfranchised father Jovy finally gets a job, and her brother Vergel lands a role in an ultra-fabulous amateur production of a Broadway classic.

Ate Lovia brings together a cast and creative team of seasoned veterans and burgeoning newcomers for kwento’s debut production. From Playwright Jordan Shea (Kasama Kita) “ It’s a political and intergenerational story that will resonate with Filipinos, non-Filipinos, and anyone who has survived the ever-changing migrant landscape of Australia. It’s a distinct story about survival in the environments that are so familiar to anyone who has sacrificed the past to make their future here.”

From Director Kenneth Moraleda (STC/CAAP Directors Initiative) “What drew me to this play was its urgency and heart. Through nostalgia it examines ourpresent and imagines a future to yearn yearn for. The characters are vivid. It’s a drama with plenty of laughs, but never diminishes how hard the ‘others’ must work to survive in this country.”
