After a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 74th annual Tony Awards returned to the stage as part of a four-hour event airing on the new streaming service Paramount+ as well as CBS in America and 10 Peach in Australia.

“We’re a little late, but we are here!” host Audra McDonald said at the start of the first portion of the show. “It’s wonderful to see half of your beautiful faces,” she began. “Like every show on Broadway, our audience is vaxxed and masked. Masks have made re-opening of theaters a reality, after more than 560 nights in the dark. The lights are on and we’re back.”

Following the two-hour special, The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back! aired live from the Winter Garden Theatre in New York. The special celebrated the return to live theater, featured performances from the three Tony-nominated best musical contenders and also included the live presentation of three Tony Awards, including best play, best revival of a play and best musical.

Host Leslie Odom Jr. kicked it off with a performance in front of the theater that then transitioned to inside. Other performers included the Moulin Rouge cast, who performed “Lady Marmalade”; John Legend, who performed “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” from the Temptations musical Ain’t Too Proud; and Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who reunited to perform “For Good” from Wicked.
