Be More Chill, the smash-hit musical that built a cult following across the world is making its way to the Illawarra’s Arcadians Theatre Group this August. This production will be presented for a strictly limited two-week season from August 6-14, 2021, at the Miner’s Lamp Theatre in Corrimal, NSW.
Be More Chill is based on the 2004 debut young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini, who drew on his own experiences of depression and his responses to the rollercoaster ride of high-school pressures. It was developed into a musical as part of a new play development program, with original music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, and a book by Joe Tracz, who sought to honour Vizzini’s vision.
“Be More Chill has captivated me ever since I first listened to the soundtrack when travelling to New York City in 2016,” said director Justin Clarke. “I stumbled upon the show purely by accident in my Spotify recommendations and from then, I’ve listened to both the original and Broadway soundtracks back-to-back multiple times. The Joes’ book and orchestrations allows for a variety of possibilities that one could approach it from. We are so excited for audiences to come into the theatre and have some fun and laughs with us. The show itself is a condensed ball of humour and energy!”
Be More Chill follows Jeremy Heere as he simply survives through the day-to-day high school motions, being the victim of the school bully, Rich, fawning after the adorably nerdy Christine, and being supported through it all by his nostalgia-hungry best friend, Michael Mell. It’s not until Jeremy discovers the existence of a SQUIP (Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor), a pill manufactured in Japan and sourced from the dark corners of the web, that may just hold the key to finally making him cool, and allowing him to more than survive – could the SQUIP even help Christine to finally notice him?
“Be More Chill is a technological kaleidoscope with high energetic songs that will make you laugh, cringe, and cry,” said Noah Cegielski, who plays Jeremy in Arcadian’s production. “It is a show that highlights the importance of accepting the things about ourselves that make us unique.”
With music and lyrics by Joe Iconis and a book by Joe Tracz, Be More Chill is directed by Justin Clarke, choreographed by Brayden Kennedy, with music direction by Adele Masters and Er-Chih Li, scenic design by Daniel Stefanovski, costume design by Troy Lester-Reynolds, lighting design by Curtis Paz and produced by Jason Ayers.
A stellar ensemble cast with national and international experience bring this hilarious story to life including, Noah Cegielski, John Lester-Reynolds, Jameisha Regal-Baker, Louie Cuff, Kane McCarthy, Hannah Garbo, Ashley Hayes, Damien Morley, Elizabeth Ellis, William Rogut, Caitlyn Pfenning, Adam Watt, Loza Mews and Sarah Gray.
A Broadway production of Be More Chill began previews of in February 2019, officially opened in March 2019, and closed in August 2019, becoming a Tony Award nominee for Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Musical, Music, Lyrics and Orchestration, Broadway.com Audience Award winner for Favourite New Musical, and Theatre Fan’s Choice Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Choreography as well as several other nominations and winnings in various categories in 2019.
Be More Chill’s Broadway cast recorded a new soundtrack – by now the show had undergone script changes that chimed with fans’ feedback – and the total streams for both Be More Chill albums have now reached 350 million. An off-West End production at The Other Palace, London, opened on 18 February 2020. A film adaptation is currently in development.
