Nancye Hayes brings hip-hop to Sydney’s Hayes Theatre with Half Time

One remarkable dance team. One big chance. One small twist… You’ve got to be over 60!

The incredible true story of ten ordinary seniors with extraordinary dreams who audition to dance at halftime for a major basketball team. Only after making the cut do they learn they won’t be dancing tap, salsa, or swing–instead, they will bring down the house with a style that is entirely new to them: hip-hop. Take the uplifting journey with these dreamers–and the young coaches who inspire them along the way–as they battle self-doubt, stereotypes, and even each other for a chance to bust a move at center court in front of the 20,000 screaming fans. Together they remind us that in life, when the odds are stacked against you and the challenges seem too great to overcome, it’s not the end of the game–it’s Half Time.

Nancye Hayes and the cast of Half Time

Theatre legend, Nancye Hayes, who has been doing the circuits on Sydney stages since the ’60’s, has taken to the stage of the Elizabeth Bay’s Hayes Theatre for the feel-good Half Time – a show, audiences say, is not to be missed.

She is appearing alongside an all-star cast including Gabrielle Chan (Chimerica), Dolores Dunbar (Funny Girl), Stefanie Jones (Muriel’s Wedding), Chaska Halliday (Pippin) and Donna Lee (Oklahoma) in the new musical. The show, which opened April 1st, tells the true story of ten seniors who refuse to grow old quietly, instead aiming to land a plum gig performing hip-hop at half time for a major league basketball team. It has been adapted from the Tribeca Film Festival hit doco Gotta Dance by filmmaker Dori Bernstein. Bernstein, who produced Broadway sensations Legally Blonde and Thoroughly Modern Millie quickly realised the story had legs, adapting it for the stage.

The show is directed by Helen Dallimore, who played Glinda in the West End production of Wicked, plus Jessica Manning on musical direction and Madison Lee on choreography. “What a thrill to be back on stage at the Hayes in a show about not acting your age,” Hayes says. “Especially as I will be joined by some friends with whom I last performed in the original production of Chicago 40 year ago, in Dolores Dunbar and Joy Miller.”
